PDA Series: Generative AI and Library Instruction: Keeping It Real (and Ethical!) Online
Session Details:
This webinar will examine the increasing impact of generative AI on academic research and citation practices. It highlights findings from a survey and course assignment given to students in Florida Tech’s COM 2012: Navigating the Information Landscape during the Fall 2024 semester, designed to assess their understanding of generative AI and its potential pitfalls. The presentation will address best practices for ensuring accuracy and integrity when using generative AI, explore ethical challenges, and share strategies for librarians to foster responsible AI use in academia.

William Bowman, Evans Library, Florida Institute of Technology
William (Bill) Bowman has been the engineering and science librarian for Florida Institute of Technology for 6 years. In his career as a librarian, he has been a librarian for all manner of academic institutions, from inner city colleges to rural technical schools; from community colleges to research institutions, from North to South (he has not yet done East to West though). He also has training in nuclear and particle physics.
Chelsea Carroll, Evans Library, Florida Institute of Technology
Chelsea Carroll is currently the Head of Library Instruction at the Florida Institute of Technology's Evans Library. Chelsea earned her MLIS from Syracuse University iSchool and has 10 years of experience in academic libraries. Her research interests include information literacy, pedagogy, and library assessment.
Kaylee Erdos, Evans Library, Florida Institute of Technology
Kaylee Erdos is a User Experience and Instruction Librarian at the Evans Library at Florida Institute of Technology. Kaylee earned her Master of Science in Information from Florida State University. With over five years of experience in various librarian roles, her primary responsibilities include resource sharing and cataloging. She is dedicated to supporting student success in many ways, including presenting undergraduate library orientation each semester, assisting with thesis and dissertation formatting, and providing one-on-one research support.
Suzanne Odom, Evans Library, Florida Institute of Technology
Suzanne Odom is a seasoned reference librarian with over 25 years of experience in academic libraries. Currently she is the User Experience Librarian at the Florida Institute of Technology, where she has worked for 15 years. Suzanne has a wealth of knowledge in information retrieval, research assistance, and library services. She is passionate about helping students and faculty navigate the complexities of academic resources. Outside of her professional life, Suzanne enjoys walking and exploring nature, volunteering with the Boy Scouts (her son is on his way to becoming an Eagle Scout) and babying her cat, Smokey.
Wanda Perez, Evans Library, Florida Institute of Technology
Wanda Perez holds a master’s degree in library science and a doctorate in education with a specialization in instructional design for online learning. With over 20 years of experience as an instruction librarian in academic libraries, she brings a deep commitment to teaching and supporting student success. Alongside teaching COM 2012, she serves as the library liaison for the College of Business. Wanda’s primary area of interest focuses on the development of generative AI and its applications in teaching and enhancing information literacy competencies.
