FLVC/PDA Series: The Hidden Curriculum: Digital Organization as a Literacy Skill Online
Description: This talk highlights a collaborative effort to teach digital organizational skills through an online instructional module. Despite being labeled “digital natives,” many incoming students lack basic strategies for managing and preserving their digital files, especially in today’s cloud-based environment where there is often a disconnect between frequent tech use and deeper tech understanding. Effective digital organization is foundational to student success and an essential element of digital literacy.
The module introduces core skills that support lifelong learning such as file naming and storage strategies, basic digital security practices, and digital preservation techniques to maintain long-term access to academic work. The module incorporates self-reflection questions, real-world scenarios, and knowledge checks to help students apply good organizational practices into their academic lives. We will provide an overview of the module components and discuss how digital literacy and organizational skills can impact student success.
