About Annual Reviews: Annual Reviews is a non-profit publisher, and our mission is to synthesize and integrate knowledge for the progress of science and the benefit of Society. We publish 51 review journals across the life, physical, and social sciences.

About the Subscribe to Open Program:

Under S2O, for journals in which we maintain the required subscription/funding levels, we’ll publish the 2026 volumes of these journals open access under a creative commons license on each journal’s respective official date of publication. Prior to each journal’s official publication date, access to any articles made available in advance (also known as, “Reviews-in-Advance”) will only be available to active subscribers.

Under S2O, total global usage in 2024 was up by 44% over 2022, the last year all journals were last paywalled. Via IP analysis, we can see that most of this usage increase comes from users outside of subscribing institutions. This includes users tied to public health organizations, hospitals, state and local government, K-12 institutions, legislatures, and even police departments and correctional facilities. This demonstrates the community benefit thanks to subscribing institutions under S2O.

Institutional subscribers enjoy the following exclusive benefits under subscribe to open:

  • Access to Reviews-in-Advance (RIA’s)
  • Guaranteed permanent data rights to the 2026 volume (access is not guaranteed without a subscription)
  • Enhanced back volume availability (where available)

For journals successfully funded under S2O, subscribers enjoy the following additional benefits:

  • Seamless access for everyone at their institutions, wherever they are, whenever they need it
  • Authors from their institutions will have their articles published Open Access with no article processing charges
