SUMMARY:PDA Series: Mind the Gap: Transactional Distance and Access to Human Support in Academic Libraries in Florida
DESCRIPTION:Session: \n\nChristine Woods will share the results of the
study published in the Florida Libraries Journal and presented at the
Florida Library Association Conference. The purpose of the research study
was to determine the transactional distance of access to human support in
academic libraries in Florida. Transactional distance is defined as the gap
between the learner and the teacher in online classes. In other words\, how
far away does the learner feel from the teacher or the ability to get help.
This definition was applied to how far away the learner feels from the
library or the ability to get help. \n\nThis study focused on the premise
that transactional distance for students increases as the number of steps
to reach the library and library support increases.\n\n\n	Participants will
learn about transactional distance relating to supporting students in
academic libraries. \n	Participants will learn about strategies or best
practices to mitigate the gap in transactional distance in academic
libraries. \n	Participants will learn about the importance of library
websites and support services such as virtual reference to close the gap of
transactional distance and the digital divide. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n
